What is ROBUX?

Robux (formerly represented by R$ until 2019 and stylized as ROBUX until 2017) is the official virtual currency used on Roblox. Introduced on May 14, 2007, Robux was originally one of two currencies available on the platform, alongside Tix. The name "Robux" was created by Shedletsky as a combination of the words Roblox and Bux (Bucks).

Robux is recognized as Roblox's primary virtual currency by both the community and platform staff. It is used to purchase various digital items and experiences, including avatar accessories, clothing, game passes, and in-game purchases. Most paid content on Roblox is priced in Robux, including user-generated items, developer products, and passes. However, certain creator tools, such as paid plugins, are sold in US Dollars rather than Robux.

Players can use Robux to customize their avatars, unlock special features, access premium experiences, and purchase exclusive virtual items through the Roblox Marketplace. Robux can be purchased using real money or earned through eligible creator activities, such as developing experiences, selling avatar items, and monetizing in-game content. Understanding how to earn, spend, and manage Robux can help players make better decisions while enjoying Roblox.

Robux has also become an important part of internet meme culture. Similar to other popular gaming currencies, such as Fortnite's V-Bucks and Minecraft's Minecoins, Robux frequently appears in online jokes, memes, and gaming discussions. One well-known example is the Bobux meme, which gained significant popularity in late 2020 and became widely recognized within and beyond the Roblox community.

On November 21, 2019, Roblox replaced the original R$ currency symbol with a golden, rounded hexagonal icon resembling a lug nut. Following this redesign, Roblox also discouraged the use of the former R$ abbreviation, potentially to avoid confusion with the Brazilian real, which uses the same currency symbol. The updated Robux icon helped establish a more distinctive and recognizable identity for Roblox's virtual currency.
